This arch was constructed through the wall by the emperor Augustus. In 262 one Marcus Aurelius Victor had an inscription added to the emperor Gallienus, replacing the earlier dedicatory inscription. The arch cracked in an earthquake, but re-settled itself into a stable configuration.
